From January 16 – 21, 2016, as part of a commitment to alleviate orthopedic handicaps in early childhood, Polio Foundation in Ahmedabad concluded its third successful scoliosis medical mission in collaboration with a team of international experts in spine surgery and electro-monitoring technology from United Kingdom. The mission was organized and hosted by the Polio Foundation, and supported by a grant from IASA.
The Polio Foundation initiated its preparations very early and by November 2015, Dr. Amit Jhala and Dr. Dhruv Patel screened (with clinical details – photos, radiological & pathological) a total of 19 scoliosis cases, with the findings shared with the team in UK. The team included spine surgeons Dr. Vinay Jasani, Dr. Rajat Raj Verma and Dr. Shaishav Bhagat. They were supported by neuro-monitoring expert, Mr. Mushtaq Shaikh from UK, and by local anesthesiologist Dr. Bharat Oza, Dr. Manoj Kathariya, and D.r Maulik Mehta. Dr. Kalpan Desai, senior orthopedic surgeon, coordinated the pre-surgery investigations.
Upon arrival in Ahmedabad, the UK team examined all patients in details & counseled them about the surgical treatment to be offered. Patients were then scheduled for surgery in the following days. There were 5 female and 1 male patient, ranging from 7 to 25 years of age. All six cases had large curves at different levels of spine and underwent surgical correction with pedicle screws and rods. Each surgery lasted approximately seven hours with consumption of overall only four PCV, thanks to efficient use of anesthesia & high degree of surgical skill. All patients were recovered well and were ambulated by the 3rd day and continue to show further improvement.
The team was very pleased with the arrangements and reiterated their wish to have such charity mission held every year at the Polio Foundation. From Left – Mr. A. N.
